While emotions arise unconsciously, are natural responses to stimuli, and are neither positive or negative, it is helpful to learn to manage them. When our emotions run rampant, they can affect our relationships and our careers. Our emotions have a direct impact on our physical bodies, such as: our heart rate increases, our digestion slows, our blood pressure rises, among many other physical responses. It is not realistic to think we will always be able to control our emotional states. However, there are many techniques and coping mechanisms to help us maintain our equilibrium and to respond to situations, to other people, and to help maintain optimum health.

There are so many, in fact, that it can be overwhelming. Over the next few weeks, we will explore some of the easiest, most accessible methods. It is important to be easy on ourselves as we begin practicing some of these techniques, some will work and others may not. That is just fine; there is no failure if a technique leaves you cold! I suggest trying several; we are all complex individuals, what works for one person may make no sense to you. It can be helpful to look at managing your emotions the same way you would when learning a new sport or mastering a new game. Hopefully, it will be helpful and fun!

We will explore some techniques in depth in the upcoming posts. For today, here are three super easy things to try if you feel off-balance:

  1. Close your eyes and take several deep breaths–that’s it. Just breathe.
  2. Get a piece of paper and write 5 things you are grateful for. (A gratitude journal is a great way to shift your thoughts and feelings.)
  3. If you can, get up and move! Walk around the block, your office, or dance in the living room!

Until next time, be kind to yourself and have the best day possible!
